Across Malaysian studios, a full colour change typically lands between RM 3,000 and RM 12,000, with premium films and complex finishes going higher. That spread isn't studios being coy; it reflects real differences in the car, the film and the work involved.

This guide breaks down what actually drives the number, so the quotes you collect make sense — and so you can spot a price that's too good to be true.

What actually drives the price

Vehicle size and panel count matter most. A Myvi has far less surface area than an Alphard, and fewer complex curves than a sports car with aggressive aero. More material, more time, more disassembly — more cost.

Film brand and tier is the next lever. Entry-level calendared vinyl is cheap to buy but harder to install cleanly and ages quickly in Malaysian heat. Premium cast films from established brands cost several times more per metre, conform properly around curves, and carry meaningful warranties. Most of the gap between a RM 3,500 quote and an RM 8,000 quote is film quality and preparation time, not margin.

Finish adds a premium of its own: gloss is the baseline, while satin, matte, metallic and colour-flip films cost more — and some specialty finishes demand more careful handling, which shows up in labour.

Finally, condition and complexity: damaged or resprayed paint needs assessment before film goes on, and cars that need heavy disassembly (door handles, lights, trim) take longer to do properly.

Typical ranges across Malaysian studios

As market context — not a quote — compact hatchbacks commonly run RM 3,000–6,000 for a full colour change; sedans and SUVs RM 4,500–9,000; and premium films, larger vehicles or complex finishes RM 8,000–12,000+. Partial work scales down accordingly: roofs, mirrors and accent packages are a fraction of a full wrap.

Wrap or respray?

At similar money, the two are different products. A quality respray is permanent: original paint is gone, and with it some resale flexibility. A wrap is reversible — the factory colour stays preserved underneath, protected from light scratches and sun fade while the film takes the wear.

A wrap is also faster (days, not weeks) and doesn't risk mismatched blending on future repairs. One administrative note: if you permanently change your car's colour, updating the vehicle registration becomes a consideration — worth checking the current JPJ position for your situation; a removable wrap keeps your options open either way.

Getting a real number

Send your car’s make, model and year, a couple of photos, and the look you’re after. If protection matters more than colour, ask about paint protection film instead — different film, different job, and sometimes the better spend.
